BBC | October 2026 | Mia St Hilaire's Family Call for Stronger Food Allergy Safety Laws
The family of 12-year-old Mia Shea St Hilaire, who died following a severe allergic reaction to a milkshake contaminated with hazelnuts, is calling for urgent changes to food allergy safety regulations.
Mia died in August 2023 after drinking a milkshake at the Pop Inn Cafe in Bermondsey, London. An inquest into her death revealed that the blender used to prepare her drink had not been properly cleaned, leaving traces of hazelnut.
Following the inquest, Mia’s family is calling for a dedicated allergy safety rating scheme for food businesses, similar to the existing Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, to help people living with food allergies make informed decisions about where they eat.
In this ITV News report, Mia’s family shares their heartbreaking loss and their determination to prevent another tragedy.
Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE, co-founder of Natasha’s Foundation, also speaks about the urgent need for stronger allergen management, accountability and enforcement across the food service industry.
Natasha’s Foundation stands alongside Mia’s family in calling for meaningful change to protect the millions of people living with food allergies.
No family should ever have to lose a child because of failures in food allergy safety.
