The BBC just revealed that TikTok Shop is allowing people to sell food without listing ANY allergens. TikTok Shop is an online shopping feature built into the TikTok app. Creators and businesses can sell products directly through videos, livestreams, and their profiles meaning you can watch a viral food trend and buy the snack in the same scroll.
It’s fast, easy… and right now, shockingly unregulated when it comes to food safety. We’re not talking about small print - we are talking about no ingredient information at all - just “spices” or “not applicable” listed for products that contain allergens such as milk and wheat.
“TikTok should be responsible for making sure sellers meet legal requirements… if they don’t, they should be removed.” - Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE
TikTok deleted some of the products after being called out by the BBC, but here’s the problem:
❌ The sellers are still there.
❌ They are still selling food.
❌ There is still no allergen info.
🛑 No one should have to guess if their next bite could send them to the hospital. Platforms like TikTok need to do better and ensure that ALL their food sellers, are complying with food law.
