Dudley Zoo Leads the Way with Allergy Awareness Signage
How one allergy mum is making UK attractions safer for families with food allergies
The Power of Allergy Parents
An allergy parent recently shared a fantastic discovery with us - allergy awareness signage at Dudley Zoo. For visitors living with food allergies, being acknowledged and included can transform an ordinary day out into a safe and welcoming experience.
This groundbreaking initiative is thanks to zoo keeper Jodie Dryden, who is also an allergy mum. Her son has severe food allergies, and she understands the daily challenges allergic families face when visiting attractions, cafés, and play areas.
Determined to make a change, Jodie approached Dudley Zoo management and championed the introduction of clear, visible allergy signage across the site.
“Dudley Zoo is the first zoo in England to have allergy awareness signage,” Jodie explained. “I now have other zoos contacting me to put the same signage up in their play areas! I’m pushing for this to be included in best practice guidelines for all zoos.”
Why Allergy Signage Matters
Allergy-friendly signage plays a vital role in keeping people safe, raising awareness among staff and visitors, and reassuring families that their needs are being taken seriously. Dudley Zoo’s initiative is already inspiring other UK zoos to follow suit, proving that one small change can have a big impact.
At The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, we believe this is a brilliant example of the power of allergy parents to create lasting, meaningful change in public spaces.
