Daily Mail | May 2026 | Idris Qayyum’s Family Are Still Waiting for Answers
Idris Qayyum
Two years on, Idris Qayyum’s family are still waiting for answers after a fatal food allergy reaction abroad.
In June 2024, 19-year-old Idris Qayyum tragically died from a food-induced allergic reaction within 24 hours of arriving at a hotel in Turkey. The holiday had been purchased through the tour operator Love Holidays. It was his first holiday abroad without his family.
Idris had always been vocal about his peanut allergy - he asked questions and used Google Translate if in any doubt to double check ingredients.
At the hotel, Idris ate some cake that he was assured was peanut free but unfortunately this triggered anaphylaxis from which he did not recover. Today, 19 May 2026, was supposed to be the inquest into Idris’s death.
However, due to Love Holiday’s delays in presenting vital evidence, the coroner was forced to turn it into a remote pre-inquest hearing instead and to reschedule the inquest for mid-December.
The family’s barrister raised many concerns, particularly around Love Holiday’s accountability and the lack of progress in their investigation into Idris’s death.
Our Founder Tanya Ednan-Laperouse was present at the pre-inquest hearing to support Idris’s family.
Idris’s family told us,
“Today's pre-inquest hearing happened 8 days before what should have been Idris’s 21st birthday. Our lives have been shattered forever, nothing feels the same. Idris had such a positive, promising future ahead but instead we now visit him at his grave. This is the most pain we have ever experienced. Lessons must be learned, changes must be made.”
For millions of people living with food allergies, stories like Idris’s are a devastating reminder of how critical clear allergen communication, proper food allergy training, accountability, and emergency preparedness are. Food allergies are not preferences or inconveniences. They are serious medical conditions that can lead to life-threatening allergic reactions within minutes.
At Natasha’s Foundation, we continue to campaign for stronger food allergy awareness, improved allergy safety standards, better staff training, and greater accountability to help prevent future tragedies. Everyone living with food allergies deserves to feel safe when travelling, eating out, attending school, or simply living everyday life.
